My First Conversation in an English Speaking Country

It was in September 2016. I had just finished my contract in Barranquilla and got the idea to Improve my English. So, I decided to take a break and travel to USA to have interactions in English with locals and travelers.

I booked a flight to Boston and made a short plan for the journey which was supposed to be three months.

One day before the trip, I packed my bag with only basic stuff, a pair of jeans, 10 shirts, a sweater, a jacket, enough underwear and toiletries, now I was ready to fly! The big day came and I went to the airport. I had to do a big line at the Spirit counter in order to be checked in. I know some people don’t like Spirit, but it’s cheap, and you get what you need, perfect for people on a budget like me. Finally I boarded the plane.

From the very beginning, the experience was totally new and amazing. During the flight, my fellow passengers were playing a game that I didn’t understand, but I wanted to know more about it, plus I knew that I had to Interact with Native English Speakers every time I could. My purpose was improving my English.

I tried to ask them about the game several times but I felt so ashamed to do it. I was a bit shy back then and it was difficult for me to start up a conversation with total strangers. Actually this trip helped me overcome that obstacle.

After some time pondering how to ask them about their game, I just said, excuse me, what is that game about? The very nice passenger next to me answered immediately and asked me if I wanted to try. It was difficult to understand the game as it was totally new to me and my listening comprehension back then was not very good.

We talked for a while before finally landing. Sometimes I did not understand what they were saying, but at the end I was very happy with myself, because finally, I was able to have my first English Conversation in an English speaking country, even before landing!
